In the US, the media is often called the fourth branch of the government. Why? Because in a republic, the people between elections don't have any direct control over the three official branches of the government (executive, legislative, judicial), while the media serves as the only real-time public feedback/control channel. Today, the fourth branch of the government is not the traditional media, but a mix of podcasts, social influencers, blogs, etc. During the Biden term, the Democrats managed to lose control over that new media. There’s nobody like Joe Rogan on their side now. This means that the Democrats not only lost control over the three official branches of the government after the elections, but also that there’s no way for them to provide key inputs into the in-between-elections feedback/control system now. To me, this is the essence of the Democrats' current predicament. There are no thought leaders among them who could go on, e.g. the Joe Rogan show, and credibly represent the dissatisfied population. They could go to Ezra Kline or Jon Stuart, but that wouldn't move the needle. Maybe AOC could go on a Joe Rogan tour. Or Bill Mahr. The Democrats need to take a page from Trump's playbook and flood the zone.

Today, Elon Musk is the real head of the executive branch of the US Government. He has a government strategy, he executes on his plans and, importantly, he is taking control over the purse. Trump only signs papers and makes loud noises.

The arrangement is clearly unconstitutional because [a bunch of arguments here], but it will take a lot of time to litigate the situation in courts. In the meantime, the de-facto president will do whatever he wants to do. This creates an important precedent for the future of American democracy. No unelected person in the history of the country had that much executive power in combination with zero accountability.

Upd.

American institutions took major hits in just two decades:
1. Misguided, expensive wars in the Middle East.
2. The financial Crisis and the bailout.
3. Covid & vaccinations.

In the background we had globalization and major demographic changes that impacted jobs, voting patterns and racial relations. If Trump wins he'll try and at least partially succeed in further eroding public trust in American institutions.

Top U.S. officials shared a batch of evidence to support their claims that the Kremlin is engaged in an active and aggressive push to influence the vote in favor of Trump. In a rare move, the Justice Department disclosed internal Russian strategy meeting notes that U.S. intelligence agencies had obtained, which reveal granular details about the Kremlin’s strategy.

One Russian document listed “target audiences” including residents of swing states, such as Arizona and Pennsylvania, Hispanic and Jewish Americans, gamers, and users of the social-media site Reddit. It also detailed efforts to create online communities to unite voters who shared perceived Republican values.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/08/headway/how-an-american-dream-of-housing-became-a-reality-in-sweden.html

While nearly every other industry has become more productive since 1968, productivity in home-building — the amount of work done by one worker in one hour, essentially — has declined by half. The country is barely building enough to maintain the status quo, which is some four million units short of need, according to Freddie Mac.

This is mostly due to regulations.

The barriers to building housing fast... weren’t technological, but institutional.

It’s time to get real with Russia. Like it or not, the west is in an existential battle it must win. After Navalny, it’s time to drop any lingering illusion that Putin’s Russia is a normal country, that it may be reasoned with. Russia has gone rogue. It is a killer regime. It is a menace to its own people and the entire democratic world.

...now that Singapore has a good handle on what makes the virus spread..
...the country's safe management measures will be simplified to cover five areas. They are: group sizes, mask-wearing, workplace rules, safe distancing and capacity limits.

Should the pandemic situation change, these parameters can be more easily tightened or relaxed across the board, instead of making small changes across different settings that will add up to a "confusing web of regulations"

The officials’ outfits were among the most notable recurrent patterns in their media appearances to announce these actions. They used face masks and wore a light-yellow jacket, which is used only in emergency situations in Korea. In a society where wearing less than a formal suit in such media speeches is unthinkable, the casual pattern and outstanding colour of the jacket immediately drew viewers’ attention. Moreover, the fact that all the officials, regardless of gender and rank, from the President to the Secretary of the health department wore exactly the same jacket also signalled solidarity and unison in the face of danger rather than normative hierarchy. From February 2020, Mun Chae-in, the President, and other government officials were often shown visiting hospitals, factories and markets wearing masks and the yellow jackets, thus signalling that life can continue but attention must be paid to the prevention of the virus’ spread.

Seoul has a unique democratic protest culture and several mass protests in the early 21st
century achieved their goals; among them, the notorious weekly rally to impeach the president
in 2016-7. The commonly generalized view expressed in world media that Koreans are docile
citizens because of their Confucian heritage (for example, Escobar 2020; Purnell 2020) does
little to address the actual reality. As my recent ethnography about protest in Seoul shows
(Sarfati 2018), the Korean public has proved its power over policy makers through their mass
dissent practices, which made the current government especially sensitive to the outcomes of
dire conditions.Read more... )

But the strongest and most apparent reason why the multitude hated him was based on the matter of the tenth of the spoil of Veii, and herein they had a plausible, though not a very just ground of complaint. 5 He had vowed, as it seems, on setting out against Veii, that if he should take the city, he would consecrate the tenth of its booty to the Delphian god. But after the city had been taken and sacked, he allowed his soldiers full enjoyment of their plunder, either because he shrank from annoying them, or because, in the multitude of his activities, he as good as forgot his vow.
...
The Senate voted, not that the booty should be redistributed, for that would have been a difficult matter, but that those who had got it should, in person and under oath, bring the tenth thereof to the public treasury. This subjected the soldiers to p115 many vexations and constraints. They were poor men, who had toiled hard, and yet were now forced to contribute a large share of what they had gained, yes, and spent already.... The soldiers were filled with indignation at the thought that it was the goods of the enemy of which he had once vowed a tithe, but the goods of his fellow citizens from which he was now paying the tithe.
