Из войны с Украиной Россия выйдет с огромными моральными, материальными и человеческими потерями.

Моральные потери можно оценить как окончательную потерю статуса великой державы, сила которой заключается не только в "армии и флоте".
Материальные потери - триллион долларов от замедления роста, оттока капитала и санкций.
Человеческие потери - 2 миллиона человек из-за преждевременных смертей, вызванных кризисом, падение рождаемости и эмиграция.

The most persecuted European national minority in the second half of the 1930s was not the four hundred thousand or so German Jews (the number declining because of emigration) but the six hundred thousand or so Soviet Poles (the number declining because of executions).

Polish citizens who refused to allow their identities to enter Soviet records could not be observed and punished with desirable efficiency. As it happened, the vast majority of people who had rejected the Soviet passport were Jewish refugees from western Poland.

They had fled the depredations of the SS, only to be deported by the NKVD to Kazakhstan and Siberia. Of the 78,339 people deported in the June 1940 action that targeted refugees, about eighty-four percent were Jewish.
Usually people who had no experience in the countryside, Polish Jews were at least as helpless as the Poles who had gone before them. Artisans and cobblers were sent to the far Russian north to fell trees. --- Snyder, T. 2012. p. 141.

Несколько месяцев назад я писал о том, что мы живем в Раю. Надо признать, что с тех пор количество ада в нашей жизни несколько увеличилось. Тем не менее, когда читаешь книгу о том, что творили СССР и Германия с 1930-х по 1950-е, начинаешь по-новому ценить современную райскую жизнь.

In the first (1933–1938), the Soviet Union carried out almost all of the mass killing; in the second, during the German-Soviet alliance (1939–1941), the killing was balanced. И еще, пока не забыл. Обе силы сознательно уничтожали интеллигенцию: национальную и интернациональную. Когда читаешь цитаты из Гитлера о задаче по уничтожению польской интеллигенции, цитаты из Ленина/Сталина о русской и этнической интеллигенции ("говно нации") смотрятся совсем по-другому. Культура (background) передается через людей, а не артефакты: книги, кино, газеты, картины, и пр. Что толку от книжки стихов Пушкина или Гете, если для следующего поколения их интерпретируют убийцы и агенты тайной полиции?

Recent events present an interesting moral philosophy question, whether economic sanctions are a form of collective punishment. Here we can see a sharp contrast between western financial sanctions and Russian agricultural counter-sanctions. The former deny western banks high profits from Russian energy and banking sectors. The latter deny Russian citizens access to affordable foodstuffs.

И можно предполагать, что остальные, рангом поменьше, тоже сами себя загипнотизировали.

Там у него еще есть параграф, который отлично иллюстрирует понятие high information costs:

Кто там у них сегодня? Каратели, силовики или опять каратели? Самопровозглашенные народные республики, просто народные республики или даже «территории Донецкой или Луганской областей»? Киевский режим, кровавая хунта или президент Украины? Все это – материал для анализа, исходя из которого можно делать выводы о том, что именно в головах у российских властителей, как они собираются реагировать на новые вызовы, как видят дальнейшее развитие ситуации и на что готовы пойти, чтобы своего добиться.

В условиях тотальной информационной закрытости российской власти это, кстати, едва ли не единственный способ составить хоть какое-то представление о ее намерениях.

У Путина тоже нет информации поэтому он действует инстинктивно. Особенно хорошо это видно в отношении экономических вопросов, где он ни ухом, ни рылом.

As many Soviet prisoners of war died on a single given day in autumn 1941 as did British and American prisoners of war over the course of the entire Second World War.
The Germans shot, on a conservative estimate, half a million Soviet prisoners of war. By way of starvation or mistreatment during transit, they killed about 2.6 million more. All in all, perhaps 3.1 million Soviet prisoners of war were killed.

From among the terrorized and starving population of the prisoner-of-war camps, the Germans recruited no fewer than a million men for duties with the army and the police.
