Oct. 24th, 2023 04:43 pmOn a totally unrelated subject. Last season Harry Kane was the captain of Tottenham and he scored a bunch of goals for the team. In summer he became a free agent and signed with Bayern for a cool E100M fee. Everybody thought that Tottenham was finished.
Not so fast. With Kane gone, other Tottenham players are scoring at a nice pace and the team is at the top of the Premier League. Moreover, they are playing well as a team, which is definitely the work of their manager. Of course, Tottenham got lucky in the controversial game with Liverpool, but hey in sports "they don't ask how you score; they ask how many." In the meantime, Kane is providing the much needed scoring for Bayern. Not much adjustment was needed for him to become productive for the team.
I can't remember any other case where the departure of the best player improved both his former and the current teams.

May. 26th, 2022 10:44 amBefore the game, a Man City color announcer said that the team is in a Ukraine-like situation because it controls its own destiny. Remarkably, Ukraine entered everyday life for football fans in the UK as an example of the will for self-determination.

Aug. 8th, 2021 01:54 pmRhythmic gymnastics would make a great anchor show at an annual Aphrodisia festival in ancient Greece. Both Paris and Odysseus would agree that the skills and beauty demonstrated by today's top teams are divine in nature.
Nevertheless, Athing Mu, the runner, is the best. She runs just like the olympians on this ancient vase.

Productivity growth due to the pandemic:
Because pandemic practices created so much more time for shooting, conversion rates are up across nearly all of the Bundesliga’s best teams. Bayern has turned 19.1% of its shots into goals since the Bundesliga resumed on May 11, up from a league-leading 15.6% before the break, according to Opta Sports. Dortmund is up to 26.1% from 19.7%.

Financial Fair Play was introduced by Uefa to prevent clubs in its competitions from spending beyond their means and stamp out what its then president Michel Platini called "financial doping" within football.
Clubs need to balance football-related expenditure - transfers and wages - with television and ticket income, plus revenues raised by their commercial departments. Money spent on stadiums, training facilities, youth development or community projects is exempt.

I really like the term "financial doping."

Tennis seems to be the only pro sport where the pay gap is less than an order or two of magnitude.
