BEIJING—China’s central bank has introduced a homegrown digital currency across four cities as part of a pilot program, marking a milestone on the path toward the first electronic payment system by a major central bank.

Internal tests of the digital currency are being conducted in four large cities around China—Shenzhen, Suzhou, Chengdu and Xiong’an, a satellite city of Beijing—to improve the currency’s functionality, the digital currency research institute under the People’s Bank of China confirmed Monday, in response to a request for comment.

Remarkably, the Chinese government did a full 180-degree turn on digital currencies. A complete transition to digital coins would be a major 21st century socioeconomic development accelerated by the pandemic.

Рассуждения об искусственном происхождении COVID-19 из той же серии. Еще накладывается древнее понятие о пропорциональности преступления и наказания (Хамураби, Тора, контракты, и т.д.]. "Кто-то должен ответить за сотни тысяч смертей и огромный урон мировой экономике!" Поскольку условного торговца летучими мышами на каком-то уханьском рынке невозможно наказать на триллион долларов, то ищется триллионная цель - китайское государство с его военными био-лабораториями.

Когда в 24-м веке марсиане будут писать историю первой пандемии 21-столетия, они заметят, что реальный урон американской экономике нанес вирус завезенный в Нью Йорк из Италии. Итальянцы считались "своими", напишут марсиане, поэтому их признавали жертвами эпидемии, а не злонамеренными распространителями заразы.

Ever since the beginning of the price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia, and subsequently the collapse in oil prices, the Wall Street Journal opinion writers stopped exalting economic advantages of Texas vs California. They don't talk much about the wisdom of environmental deregulation and corporate stock buybacks either. By now, Netflix alone is probably generating more profits than the entire oil industry.

The price of a barrel of West Texas Intermediate crude to be delivered in May, which closed at $18.27 a barrel on Friday, ended Monday at negative $37.63. That effectively means that sellers must pay buyers to take barrels off their hands.

The historic low price reflects uncertainty about what buyers would even do with a barrel of crude in the near term. Refineries, storage facilities, pipelines and even ocean tankers have filled up rapidly since billions of people around the world began sheltering in place to slow the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
