Короткий мемуар про shitholes, или как я стал эмигрантом

Как-то во времена перестройки* одной молодой** американке приспичило зайти в туалет на станции Тосно в Ленинградской области. Мы не советовали. Убеждали, что лучше найти подходящие кустики. Американка сказала, что кустики - это неприлично, опасно и антиобщественно. И пошла.

Когда она вышла из тосненского туалета, ей было нехорошо. Она сказала, что такого она не видела даже в Африке. Потом посмотрела на нас с сожалением*** и сочувствием, "Я не понимаю, как вы можете здесь**** жить."

* как оказалось, это было начало перестройки.
** тогда она мне казалась молодой, но сейчас я понимаю, что она была юной.
*** накануне, она посетила один из роддомов Куйбышевского (сейчас Центральный) района города Ленинграда (сейчас Санкт Петербург).
**** Страна называлась Союз Советских Социалистических Республик (сейчас Российская Федерация).

The problem with our so–called president is that by being lazy, stupid and racist he derails any meaningful discussion about immigration. He's lazy and stupid because he doesn't do his homework to evaluate the potential economic impact of his decisions. He's racist because he makes statements based on his prejudices, rather than facts.

By the way, I'm impressed how American libertarians reacted to the immigration debate. The Cato Institute consistently argued — with numbers and supporting studies — that the target immigrant groups make a positive contribution the economy. Deporting them would inflict real damage to our country. Also, Tyler Cowen showed that, e.g. immigrants from Africa make a better potential employee pool than those from Norway. The contrast with the Republicans is astounding.
