The problem with our so–called president is that by being lazy, stupid and racist he derails any meaningful discussion about immigration. He's lazy and stupid because he doesn't do his homework to evaluate the potential economic impact of his decisions. He's racist because he makes statements based on his prejudices, rather than facts.
By the way, I'm impressed how American libertarians reacted to the immigration debate. The Cato Institute consistently argued — with numbers and supporting studies — that the target immigrant groups make a positive contribution the economy. Deporting them would inflict real damage to our country. Also, Tyler Cowen showed that, e.g. immigrants from Africa make a better potential employee pool than those from Norway. The contrast with the Republicans is astounding.

Refusing to have a vote on this bill is the single biggest failure of the republican leadership. They gained a tactical advantage: by using immigration fear-mongering, they managed to gain additional seats in 2014, take control of the Senate, and block Obama's nomination of the Supreme Court judge. They also got Trump.
