In all the discussions about the policy of separating families at the border I find it fascinating that some people use all kinds of mental excuses not to accept the reality. In particular, the perceived equivalence between "распятый мальчик"(1) and the picture of the crying girl on the Time cover(2) strikes me as a perfect head–in-the-sand moment.

In case 1, we have a category of non-existing events mapped to a visual image of a child:
ø -> Representation.
Neither the type "распятый мальчик" exists, nor instances of this type exist: r -> ø for all r ⊂ R; i.e. R -> ø.
[ Similarly, we can say that a picture of a unicorn doesn't prove the existence of unicorns. No unicorns have been found in nature.]

In case 2, we we have a category of existing events (hundreds of separations S) mapped to visual representations (R) about a child:
S -> R.

The type "separated child" exists, but a specific instance (s ⊂ S) denoted by an artistic collage ( r ⊂ R) doesn't exist, i.e. r -> ø.
[ A drawing of a blue horse neither proves, nor disproves the existence of horses. The existence of horses has been proven independently].

Based on this particular similarity r -> ø, the head-in-the-ass logic proclaims that both cases are equivalent, i.e. R -> ø; therefore both cases are "fake news."
[Horses don't exist because the picture shows a blue horse.]

Fascinating.
