When you encounter an extremely challenging situation with a lot of uncertainty you need to be able to
a) fall back to solid First Principles;
b) have first-hand experience of at least seeing someone applying First Principles.
Both (a) and (b) are typically acquired through education with good teachers/mentors, either in high school or university. If you are lucky, you can encounter them, including yourself, elsewhere.
