We all know what uses the English invented for the steam engine: water pumps, railroads, steam shipts, factories, etc. What did the Italians do: they invented the cappuchino! That is, they figured out how to use the steam engine to make a better coffee drink; and in the process they solved an age-old problem, how to make warm boiled milk taste good.

When I was a kid I hated it when my mother gave me warm milk for all kinds of "простуда". In particular, I despised the "пенка". Every time I swallowed just a tiny piece of this coagulated mass of milk protein I was ready to throw up. It was totally disgusting! I would rather be sick and extra week than drink this horrible thing.

The Italians to the rescue! Now when, instead of boling, I steam milk, the liquid turns into foam, making the "пенка" the most delicious part of the experience. This fact alone may explain why Italian kids look one of the world's happiest. Just imagine, being a sick kid drinking ephemeral cappuchino instead of hard-boild milk with floating pieces of "пенка" in it. Can you imagine what a difference it made for generations and generations of children. The entire Russian culture can now be explained to the West through the taste contrast between foamed and boiled milk!
