They show really well how people have a hard time switching their thinking between contexts: in one situation you are a peer (spouse, Claire), in another – a distant subordinate (mid-level cabinet official, UN Ambassador). Since the peer mind habits are older, they take over in the subordinate context, which is inappropriate.
I wonder whether the same holds true for the reverse. Most likely, yes. They don't show it in the movies because habitual subordination doesn't lead to conflict easily - an interesting asymmetry (if real). Where else can we find it?
