Jan. 25th, 2015 09:35 am[thinking aloud] The high-tech industry has always lived in deflationary times. That is, over the last 50+ years, computing, storage, and communications kept getting exponentially better. Under the circumstances, a rational consumer would be better off if she delayed her technology purchases until it became absolutely necessary. [here we can talk about Irving Fisher's impatience theory].
What if the current deflationary situation in the West is directly linked to consumer expectations, created through years of high-tech experience, that tomorrow's going to be better than today? Also, would a new nuclear threat from Russia, besides increasing military spendings, create expectations (probability distribution) that we better consume today because there might be no tomorrow?

1779. A revolution in Law
Jan. 25th, 2015 12:43 pmToday I learned that Frederik the Great of Prussia was a true revolutionary. Here's an excerpt from the Protocol of December 11, 1779, which served as the king's direct order to the entire Prussian legal system:
upd. since there was no separation b/w the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches, the king's order was essentially reversed after his death. compare it to the Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the United States.
All men being equal before the Law, if it is a prince complaining against a peasant, or vice versa, the prince is the same as the peasant before the Law; and, on such occasions, pure justice must have its course, without regard of person. Let the Law courts, in all the provinces, take this for their rule.
For a court of Law doing injustice is more dangerous and pernicious than a band of thieves. Against these one can protect oneself. But against rogues who made use of the cloak of justice to accomplish their evil passions, again such no man can guard himself. - quoted from Thomas Carlyle's Works: History of Friedrich II of Prussia. 1887.

Innovation in Russia

$6B vs $21M.
- Given the sanctions, what should a rational investor, including a promising researcher, do?
- Run!

Meanwhile in Malaysia
Jan. 25th, 2015 07:41 pmKUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 — A religious leader has urged Muslim lawmakers to reject attempts to criminalise caning, claiming that it is an effective method to educate the young as prescribed by Islam.
“What is more important is society should be taught how to cane their children properly so that it becomes an effective tarbiyyah (education),” he said in a statement.
Zamri, who is a member of Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia’s (ISMA) ulama council, said that Islam recognises caning as one way to educate wives and children, though not to the point of abuse or injury.
Profit!
Jan. 25th, 2015 08:08 pmAsia's biggest oil producer now expects its economy grow by 4.5-5.5% this year, down from a previous estimate of 5-6%.
Its currency, the ringgit, has lost about 10% of its value against the US dollar in recent months as dwindling investor confidence has led to capital outflows.

Bloodlands, by Timothy Snyder
Most likely, Schmalhausen's Law reigned supreme in these horrible circumstances.

The good people died first. Those who refused to steal or to prostitute themselves died. Those who gave food to others died. Those who refused to eat corpses died. Those who refused to kill their fellow man died. Parents who resisted cannibalism died before their children did. Ukraine in 1933 was full of orphans, and sometimes people took them in. Yet without food there was little that even the kindest of strangers could do for such children. The boys and girls lay about on sheets and blankets, eating their own excrement, waiting for death. p. 50.
