timeletsЧитая Bloodlands, начинаешь понимать, через какой ужас прошла Украина в 20-м веке. Сначала по ней прогулялся Сталин с раскулачиванием, ссылками, коллективизацией и голодом. В результате коммунисты убили активную часть украинских крестьян и национальной интеллигенции. Потом пришел Гитлер и уничтожил еврейское население. Потом вернулся Сталин и добил остатки культурного сопротивления.
Удивительно, но у заключенного в Гулаге было больше шансов выжить, чем у украинского крестьянина в 1930-х годах.

The good people died first. Those who refused to steal or to prostitute themselves died. Those who gave food to others died. Those who refused to eat corpses died. Those who refused to kill their fellow man died. Parents who resisted cannibalism died before their children did. Ukraine in 1933 was full of orphans, and sometimes people took them in. Yet without food there was little that even the kindest of strangers could do for such children. The boys and girls lay about on sheets and blankets, eating their own excrement, waiting for death. p. 50.
