Отвечают по-разному: кровь, язык, культура, корни в родную землю прямо из позвоночника растут. Но там принципиально нет того, что можно было бы использовать в ответе на ворпрос, Почему вы считаете себя американцем? Потому что кровь, например, китайская, язык английский, культура буддийская, корни где-то из океана растут.
А вот аналога очевидного американского ответа, "Я считаю себя американцем, потому что я гражданин Америки", в ответах про русскость нет.
Это не к тому, что хуже-лучше, а просто другое.

p.s. i have an idea that the russian notion of народ can be modeled by a system with peak performance requirements. that is, народ is treated by the governing elites as spare capacity in times of crisis. russian citizens that make up народ havе no rights; their main obligation is to to be ready for self-sacrifice.
in the west, the government is held responsible before its citizens for a crisis it creates and/or can't handle; therefore, there's less need for the russian concept of self-sacrificing народ.
