Rats made the spread of lice-borne diseases such as trench fever even easier when compared to other environments. Many soldiers were fearful of rats more so than other horrors found in the trenches.

The current political life in the US looks somewhat similar to WWI Trench Warfare: lots of individual action, artillery fire, heroism, death, disease, all of which doesn't change the overall position of the warring sides.
