I've just realized that the difference between the sides in this discussion about "the complexity of the situation in Ukraine, can be easily explained by the Attribution theory. (Also see the follow-up post about "сложнейший клубок факторов").

People who insist on the complexity of the events give a situational explanation of the war in South-East Ukraine ("сложные обстоятельства"). The other side, including myself, provide an internal attribution that focuses on the actions of major players who initiated the violence.

Remarkably, in Western cultures there's a tendency for internal attribution, while the East leans toward external, i.e. situation, attribution( Hallahan, Mark; Lee, Fiona; Herzog, Thaddeus (1997). "It's Not Just Whether You Win Or Lose,It's also Where You Play the Game." Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology 6(28): 768-778. http://hdl.handle.net/2027.42/67591).

UPD. After reading all comments to the second discussion, I find it hilarious that a simple question, "Who's to blame for starting the fucking war?" draws a "learned" answer:

Разговор о единственности причины в сложных социально-политических процессах - изначально не имеет смысла.
