Since the Freakanomics days, we know that a candidate that can't raise money from the general public can't win. Campaign donations represent a real commitment to the cause, which Trump supporters can't create by simply cheering for Trump or jeering against the hated Hillary.

I feel sorry for people who for whatever reason invested their moral and political capital into Trump's campaign. He has a history of business bankruptcies; now we can add to it his 2016 moral and political default.
In August, Trump put another $2 million of his own money into the campaign. That brings his total contributions to $54 million, which includes $47.5 million in loans he made during the primaries and later forgave. Trump so far is the biggest political donor in 2016, albeit a self-interested one.
