One of the more interesting features of the modern US economy is that private companies create a huge amount of public goods and, as a result, compete directly with governments worldwide. Uber would be an example when a private company is much better than all city governments combined at providing the public with actionable information about private transportation services. TripAdvisor and Airbnb are better than governments at evaluating travel services. Where standard private contracts are concerned, it becomes harder and harder for the governments to prove that they are protecting the consumer, rather than the status quo.
