timeletsWhen we consider the recent events in Ukraine and Russia as a series of speech acts our analysis reveals a cognitive gap between the two parties.
The Maidan is saying that the Ukranian people reject a Russian-style authoritarian kleptocracy created by Yanukovich with direct support from Putin. In their turn, the Russians perceive this rejection as a direct continuation of the WWII stand-off between the Soviet Union and Ukranian Nazi collaborators (фашисты, бандеровцы, etc.).
It looks like the Russian leadership (as well as a large part of the society) is stuck in an old narrative, which is deeply rooted in the cult of the Great Patriotic war of 1941-45.
