Today when I was listening to a lecture on various theories of law, the professor gave examples of various dietary laws: vegetarianism, kosher food, haram food, etc. He was talking that a rule would look something like this: if it flies but doesn't have wings don't eat it; if it walks the earth but doesn't have legs don't eat too.

It occurred to me that such rules could develop to avoid eating a god or a demon by mistake. That is, in the culture of ancient Sumer a hybrid creature was thought to be a living manifestation of the supernatural. If something flies without wings, it means it's an "unnatural" being - don't eat it because you might offend some unknown power or become a demon yourself.
