Ooops. Russia looked so attractive, except for her "бешенный принтер"

The Ernst & Young Russia Attractiveness survey 2013 says (p. 4):

- A large and expanding consumer market, solid telecommunications infrastructure and abundant natural resources are central to Russia’s competitiveness. Respondents had a mixed view of the human resource potential and research, innovation and entrepreneurial environment in Russia. High levels of corruption, deficiencies in the legislative environment and inter-regional disparities limit Russia’s FDI potential.

- Companies from the US, Germany and France were the top investors in Russia in 2012. The number of FDI projects from Germany more than doubled, mainly because of increased investment from automotive companies.

The Germans made a big mistake, by betting on Russia's non-energy related economic future. It's not as bad as French investments in Greece, Spain, and Italy, but the long-term impact may be rather serious. The war with Ukraine effectively killed FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) in Russia. What were they thinking? Putin probably thought that he had the Germans and French by the balls.

One year ago

August 14, 2013. Russia has imposed a ban of chocolate imports from Ukraine’s confectionery company Roshen in what appears to be an attempt to punish its pro-European owner, Petro Poroshenko, a former top government minister and an influential businessman.

"There is tough competition going on for the global markets. And I am sure most of you realise that only by joining forces we can be competitive and win in this rather tough struggle," Putin told a conference in Kyiv on Saturday (27 July).

Китайцы перестали понимать Путина. Если с аннексией Крыма они еще могли видеть аналогию с Тайванем, то Донбасс для них полная загадка, потому что никаких территориальных или экономических претензий на Донбасс Россия раньше не выставляла. С одной стороны как бы хорошо, что Путин разругался с Европой (основной торговый партнер России) и готов подписывать выгодные Китаю соглашения по газу. Но с другой, трудно сказать, что ему взбредет в голову через 5-10 лет, когда придет время эти соглашения выполнять.

Японцы тоже слегка в ахуе от внезапных российских военных учений в районе Курильских островов.

В Сингапуре с некоторым удивлением наблюдают, как русские деньги бегут из России и Европы. Но не жалуются. Хотя, конечно, им несколько стремно видеть отток капитала из нефтедобывающей страны при цене нефти под $100 и огромных потребностях в развитии инфраструктуры. Внешне похоже на ситуацию в Индонезии, хотя там беспорядки внутри, а не снаружи.
