Teaching during the summer quarter has its advantages. In contrast with the regular academic year, some oddball people often sign up for the course: they are motivated, have unusual backgrounds and points of view. This summer I had several people from Brazil, a great-looking blond girl from the East Coast, a couple of my former students who decided to experiment with the new workshop format, and a male fashion model with a Russian girlfriend. It was the usual weird summer bunch who made a conscious choice to study in summer.

Today was the last workshop and by the end of it I felt like my brain was totally fried. What made my day, and maybe be even the entire summer, was this message from a guy with an exotic last name starting with De La smth:

Hi ....!
Just wanted to drop a quick note to tell you I really enjoyed your class and learned a lot from you. You're a great teacher!

It feels good, and I'm going to pour myself an extra finger of cognac tonight. Cheers!
