Beatriz Vargas, a single mother who makes $17.41 an hour washing dishes at a Stanford dining hall, said she can’t afford to rent a room in the area, in part because she earns too much from her job to be eligible for food stamps. Some nights she pays $15 to rent a van from her child’s babysitter to sleep in for the night. Stanford officials have also given her cash-value gift cards that she uses to pay for motels.
