I get a strong sense of deja vu when I listen to high-quality research talks about the coronavirus
presented at various American institutions. All these disease patterns were already discussed in Singapore media a month ago. We had at least a month to prepare, but very little of consequence happened during that time. Back in February, I couldn't imagine that the US government, given its vast resources, talent and time advantages, would be so inept and complacent as to let the epidemic spread as if it were a complete surprise. The cost of this series of blunders will be in trillions of dollars, not counting the damage to the social fabric of the country.

What surprises me even more is that 50% of Americans think that Trump is doing a good job dealing with the crisis. Neither Singaporeans, nor Koreans would accept this kind of ineptitude from their government. It seems like that there's something fundamentally wrong with democracy in our country if people can be [self-]manipulated so easily during a calamity of such magnitude.
