Next they enclose it in a hollow column of crystal, which they excavate in great quantities and which is easy to work. Это Геродот про эфиопов пишет и какой-то кристалл, с которым легко работать. Неизвестно, насколько достоверны его сведения, потому что в раскопках такого вроде бы нет. Но, действительно, многие античные технологии в средневековой Европе были утеряны; грамотность, практически, пропала. Трудно себе представить, как могло возникуть Возрождение.
