The value of a thing depends on whether it's lost or found.

Yesterday, a friend of mine lost his iPhone. When we talked last night he was a bit upset but said it was not too bad because the phone was 2 years old and cost no more than $500. Just in case, he marked the phone as lost and gave Apple my contact number.

This morning, Apple contacted me that they found the phone and I relayed the info to the friend. He recovered the phone and, relieved, remarked to me that it saved him $1,000. The value of the device doubled overnight!

Different device

$1,000 is the cost of a new phone he planned to buy as a replacement, not the one that was lost.
