Just a thought: the fake news problem is structurally similar to the fake words problem Google solved in the 1990s.

It was a problem with early search engines when they would assign high rank to webpages with lots of repeating words/terms. For example, a page with lots of "cars" would have a good chance to be first on a Lycos search for cars.
