In retrospect, Russia had a choice in 2011 whether to take a somewhat risky path toward making democracy real, including economic rights, or strengthen the already existing autocratic tendencies. The latter felt safer, more familiar, and the country moved to reassert its traditional "values."

It turns out, this "safe" path — Если не Путин то кто! — is a lot riskier than democratic (or at least economic and judicial) reforms because now everything depends on just one person at the helm. He's screwing the country and the country loves being screwed, at least for now.
