Here's an interesting observation to add to my earlier posts 1 and 2:
Basically, this relationship can be described as a case in tort law where the injurer (барин) carries no liability. Therefore, the sufferer (раб) carries the economic burden of full precaution. The person's role in social hierarchy, not his cultural background or legal status, determines liability rules.
Essentially, the person has no rights as a citizen because the rights are attached to his position in social or ethnic hierarchy instead of legal status. Under the circumstances, Savvateev's logic:
is fully rational. In modern history, Russian culture propagates and re–enforces this rule through the mechanisms of "номенклатура", "чекисты", "элита", "кооператив Озеро", "интересы этнических русских на Украине", etc.
upd. it also explains Russians' attitude toward international law. the goal is not to create a mechanism of enforcement, but rather get into the position of барин.
