In retrospect, Lee Kuan Yew's most important social achievement was creation of an independent judiciary. Paradoxically, explicit authoritarian laws that ruled Singapore politics freed judges from political manipulation, allowing them to uphold the rule of law. For example, they didn't have to pass a false judgement on rigged elections because free elections were not allowed and there was no need to falsify them.
